Counting with Teen Numbers
Tens and Ones in 247
Ten Times a Digit
Place Values of 42
How to use:
- While watching, pause at different points and ask: What do you notice? What do you wonder? What is the same? What is different?
- Eventually, we want students to notice that 42 is the same as 30+12 or 20+22 or 10+32 or 4 tens and 2 ones or 42 ones. The way we group a number doesn’t change the total.
Adding 10 to 33, Two Different Ways
40 is 40 ones or 4 tens
How to use:
- While watching, pause at different points and ask: What do you notice? What do you wonder?
- Eventually, we want students to notice that when we write the number 40, we can be thinking of it as 40 ones or 4 groups of 10, and the 4 in the tens place represents those 4 groups of ten. They will notice that they can count different groupings of tens and ones that still make 40 as a total. They might also notice other ways to count or identify the number.
